Book Wars a weekly feature hosted between two book review blogs – A Life Bound By Books & Much Loved Books!

It’s a fact that book lovers know all about the covers of the books they covet. Often when a title is released here in the UK, it’s sometimes vastly different across the pond in the US.  So, Michelle from Much Loved Books and I have come together to create Book Wars to talk about the difference in covers when it comes to the US vs. UK versions.

We hope from time to time authors will chime in with their thoughts as well. We welcome everyone to comment and share their thoughts too! The more the merrier!

The Book Wars winner for Here Where the Sunbeams are Green/Upside Down in the Jungle By: Helen Phillips is....the UK Cover! Thank you to everyone who voted for both books, and for picking a winner.

Also, there's a poll at the bottom of the post that we'd love to hear your input for the two covers! Tell us which one YOU love the most.

Even before the EMPs brought down the world, Alex was on the run from the demons of her past and the monster living in her head. After the world was gone, she believed Rule could be a sanctuary for her and those she’d come to love.
But she was wrong.

Now Alex is in the fight of her life against the adults, who would use her, the survivors, who don’t trust her, and the Changed, who would eat her alive.

Welcome to Shadows, the second book in the haunting apocalyptic Ashes Trilogy: where no one is safe and humans may be the worst of the monsters.

About the author:

Among other things, I was an English major in college and so I know that I'm supposed to write things like, "Ilsa J. Bick is ." Except I hate writing about myself in the third person like I'm not in the room. Helloooo, I'm right here . . . So let's just say that I'm a child psychiatrist (yeah, you read that right)as well as a film scholar, surgeon wannabe (meaning I did an internship in surgery and LOVED it and maybe shoulda stuck), former Air Force major—and an award-winning, best-selling author of short stories, e-books, and novels. Believe me, no one is more shocked about this than I . . . unless you talk to my mother.

Let the Wars Begin: Its now time to make our decision, let's see what we think about the covers and pick our favorite cover.

Lisa So, for this week I've picked the second title in the Ashes Trilogy - Shadows! I LOVE this trilogy and I LOVED the changes they made for the covers when this was released. The UK cover is still creepy, which it does fit the story, but my favorite is still the US cover.

The changes that were made with the US covers are pretty spot on. If you take a closer look at the US covers you see that it's pretty creepy and beautiful too. Love it! So, now it's YOUR turn! Which cover do YOU like best? Vote below.
Michelle This is another tough one for me this week. I love how pretty the USA cover is, even though it is meant to be a creepy book, but I also love how haunting the UK cover is.

My vote this week goes to UK, I love how haunting it is, but also the added extra creep factor of the people in the bottom part of the cover in the dark forest.

Don't forget to cast your vote in the poll below.

VOTE for YOUR favorite cover of Shadows NOW!

Review - The Burning Sky By: Sherry Thomas

Title: The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy #1)
Author: Sherry Thomas
Publisher: Balzer + Bray, 464 Pages (September 17th 2013)
From: the Publisher/Amazon Vine
Format: ARC
Add to: Goodreads
Order a copy: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository, Amazon UK

Synopsis: It all began with a ruined elixir and an accidental bolt of lightning…

Iolanthe Seabourne is the greatest elemental mage of her generation—or so she's being told. The one prophesied for years to be the savior of The Realm. It is her duty and destiny to face and defeat the Bane, the greatest mage tyrant the world has ever known. A suicide task for anyone let alone a sixteen-year-old girl with no training, facing a prophecy that foretells a fiery clash to the death.

Prince Titus of Elberon has sworn to protect Iolanthe at all costs but he's also a powerful mage committed to obliterating the Bane to avenge the death of his family—even if he must sacrifice both Iolanthe and himself to achieve his goal.

But Titus makes the terrifying mistake of falling in love with the girl who should have been only a means to an end. Now, with the servants of the Bane closing in, he must choose between his mission and her life.

Review: 3 Stars - The Burning Sky, the first title in The Elemental Trilogy by author Sherry Thomas takes readers on a quest between two characters who have been destined to come together to change their world for the better.

This review is rough for me to write. I liked the book, just didn't love it. It's very different and I was somewhat confused more than a few times due to transition changes in points of view and how certain characters were involved. Maybe this is more from the fact that it took me quite a while to get into and it wasn't until the last maybe quarter of the book that things picked up and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough.

So how about I talk about the characters a bit. First we have Iolanthe an elemental mage who is extremely powerful yet doesn't know her full capabilities yet. She has no idea she is destined to help defeat the Bane, a truly evil mage who just so happens to be one of the strongest in The Realm. Then we have Titus who is Price of Elberon and has sworn to protect Iolanthe no matter what. He's willing to lay his life down for her. It's when he witnesses a sign he takes charge to get to Iolanthe and the two meet under very dangerous circumstances.

These two characters are different, quirky, flawed and very interesting. What they have to go through and what they've been through was also interesting. I liked how prepared Titus was, but when he met Iolanthe he realized that he hadn't planned for one major thing and that's for the person he was destined to help would be a girl. So much of the shocks were with Titus and how he watched Iolanthe learn and adapt after all he's put her through. Which made her a pretty fierce character to say the least.

And Titus... I had a love hate relationship with the guy. He was so guarded and often a jerk because of who he was and all he had to deal with. Due to his title it was hard to see through to the person he was underneath all the secrets and lies. I guess I felt more sorry for him than anything else because of how closed off he was forced to be and also because of what he wholeheartedly believed there was no changing the prophecy and his fate.

As mentioned above the last quarter of the book was the best. If was fulled with nonstop action and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat to see what would happen between these two and to find out who would make it out alive.

There is plenty within this first installment that'll give readers who enjoy fantasy titles something to sink their teeth into and will leave them ready to come back for more. And since this is a trilogy I know many will be waiting to see what happens next. Am I one of those people? Sure... I'd love to see where this author takes these characters next and what trouble they might find themselves in. I'm looking forward to meet Titus and Iolanthe again and following along on their continuing journey.

“Annie!” I squealed, running and scooping her up before she had the chance to escape. I rained kisses all over her face. She was clearly confused, but she seemed to like it. The evidence? She dropped her doll and squeezed my neck.
Erica stared at me through narrowed eyes. “No one, including me, likes my children that much. What is going on?”
Annie giggled on cue, like she understood her mother’s words. I laughed outright.
“Your momma’s silly, isn’t she? Isn’t she?” I asked, poking Annie’s sides.
“Oh my God, who are you?” Erica demanded. “Where’s my BFF who promised me she’d never have children so I could live vicariously through her? I swear to God if you’re pregnant…”
“Calm down,” I said over the top of Annie’s head. She twisted in my arms signaling she was over my show of affection. I placed her on the floor beside her discarded doll. “How would I even be pregnant?”
“Sex. It’s called sex,” Erica replied. She finished folding the last of Little Noah’s shirts, then tossed it in the laundry basket.
“Don’t say s-e-x in front of the baby!” I chided.
“B, she doesn’t know what sex is.”
“She’ll repeat it.”
“Who cares?”
“Oh, so you want to be the mother with the kid who knows the bad words?” I asked.
“Bad word?” Erica asked, laughing.
“You know what I mean,” I said. “You want to be the mother who all the other mothers gossip about? Like about how bad your parenting skills are?”
Erica placed her hand on her hip. “Yeah, I do. Fuck ‘em. Fuck all those mothers. Fuck their playdates and mommy groups and fucking Melissa and Doug puzzles. Fuck their running strollers and baby couture and breastfeeding advice. Fuck their—”
“ERICA!”
“What?”
I looked down at the floor, but Annie was gone. She’d walked away somewhere, no doubt the kitchen since that seemed to be her favorite place to play.

Title: Girl Lost
Author: Nazarea Andrews
Publisher: A&A Literary  (May 1st, 2014)
Add to: Goodreads
Order Nazarea's books online here: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, The Book Depository, Amazon UK

NOTE: This is a "New Adult" novel. Due to mature content this title is recommended for ages 17+

Synopsis: Northern was supposed to be a fresh start—a place where people didn’t know who I was or how I had spent years in and out of mental institutes. People didn't know about my parents death or the island no one heard of. But when Peter sits next to me in lit class, I can’t stop the memories, and I don’t want to. He looks too much like the boy from the island, and despite my best intentions, coaxes my secrets from me.

He’s gorgeous, irresistible, a little mad, and completely lost—we are a pair of broken cogs in a world neither of us truly fits into. And he listens when I talk, about the past and the terrifying future. He is somehow gentle and fierce, heartbreaking in his devotion and savage in his defense.

When Belle, his best friend, shows up, pale and lovely and sick, Peter pulls away from me, a startling withdrawal. It’s a relationship that scares and confuses me. She is at times warm and friendly, and other times is violent and unpredictable.

Peter says that he wants me, but refuses to let himself get close. And there are secrets, surrounding both of us, that border on nightmares. As the memories close in, as Belle gets sicker and more violent, I’m torn between what is true and what I believe, and what this magical boy knows about my mysterious past.

*Suitable for 17+. A romantic contemporary retelling of the boy who never grew up.

I can't wait to read Girl Lost!!! I have loved every other book that I've read by Nazarea and I'm always looking forward to reading more from this awesome author, so I'm excited!

Excerpt:

I shrug. "Because I can't help but trust you. Even though it's stupid and I have no good reason for it--I want to trust you. I want you to be someone I can trust." I open my mouth, to tell him about the boy, about why it is so important to me. Why I should stay away from him, and why I can't seem to.

Peter speaks first. "I don't know who your father is. I don't know why you want to run from your past. But the thing is, Gwen, I don't care. I want to be part of now. I'll fight tooth and nail to be part of now."

"What if now is temporary?" I ask, thinking about my aunt and my tenuous grasp on sanity and all the reasons I should step away from Peter.

"Then we enjoy what we have," he murmurs. I shudder as his voice wraps around me, as warm as the hand curving around my neck. He makes a low noise, and lifts me, until I'm sitting in the circle of his crossed legs. Pressed against him. I can feel his heartbeat through his shirt, the unsteady pounding. His fingers are still pressed against my hips, still holding onto me despite having me where he wants.

I should move back, put distance between us, so he knows that this isn’t ok. I sit still and silent in his arms and wait for the chiding voice, telling me it’s wrong.

The voice that has drown out every thought and feeling, every time a boy has touched me.

But it’s silent, oddly absent—maybe it is as charmed by Peter’s appearance as I am.

“What is Lane, to you?” he asks, breaking my thoughts.

I shrug, looking at the pulse point pounding in his throat. “A friend.”

“I don’t want you near him.” He says.

There is a part of me, slight but there, that is annoyed by his pronouncement. But the bigger part is smirking, leaning in so that my lips tickle along his neck. Peter goes very still, as I whisper, a hairs breath from his skin, “Are you jealous?”

His voice is low, gravelly, “Yes. Fuck, yes I am. I don’t want any man near you—I hate Micah for being your brother. I want you with me, always.”

His voice is so fierce, wild. It’s a savagery that is at odds with the soft circle of his arms, the gentle press of his fingers on my back.

That is all tenderness and fragile care.
